Several Hollywood Park residents braved rains and gathered at Memorial Park on Oct. 26 to formally pay tribute to a recently deceased city leader, David Swan.
What happened
Local officials unveiled a plaque honoring Swan, a former City Council member who died July 5 at age 76.
Council voted Sept. 19 to accept a citizens petition and nomination for a plaque to be dedicated to Swan’s memory at the park.
Residents supporting erecting a memorial to Swan said he moved to Hollywood Park in 1978 and was active in the community. Supporters cited his role in helping to overturn a ban on deer feeding and developing a deer herd count.
Swan served on council from 2010-12 and ran small local businesses, including the Tool Shed, a small engine repair shop. Swan’s plaque is the second one installed at Memorial Park.
What they’re saying
David’s widow, Nancy Swan, complimented ceremony attendees for pushing for a permanent tribute to her late husband.
“I want to thank Debbie [Trueman] for instigating this. I want to thank everybody that worked so hard — Tonya [Cummings], Tom Sims, Shannon Sims, Paul and Tracey Homburg and Alverne [Halloran],” Swan said. “Thanks to all of the people that I’m not even aware of and all of you who took the trouble to sign up, and also to the City Council.”
