Bexar County and University Health will be holding a series of public events designed to raise awareness of the importance of gun safety.

According to a news release, Bexar County will distribute 3,800 portable handgun safes and 1,000 handgun cable locks free of charge to residents to help increase gun safety in their home and community.

Handgun safes and cable locks will be provided at the following times and sites:

  • June 15: 4-6 p.m. at Padre Park, 6515 Padre Drive, San Antonio
  • July 8: 9-11 a.m. at Bullis County Park, 27583 Blanco Road, San Antonio
  • July 15: 9-11 a.m. at Pletz County Park, 3831 Belgium Lane, San Antonio
  • July 22: 9-11 a.m. at Comanche Park, 2600 Rigsby Road, San Antonio
  • Aug. 19: 9-11 a.m. at Rodriguez Park, 2060 Rodriguez St., San Antonio

Residents must register in advance at www.gunsafety4bexar.org to receive a gun case and/or gun lock. Only one handgun safe and one gunlock will be given per household, the release states,

County officials said such events are part of a larger effort to take proactive steps to prevent accidental discharges and unauthorized access to firearms, particularly by minors, and reduce risks associated with unsecured handguns in homes and vehicles.

County officials said this gun safety initiative is being funded with $145,000 from the American Rescue Plan Act.
