Hollywood Park is considering what to do with the Voigt Park basketball court, which has been abused mainly by nonresidential visitors, city authorities said.
City Council on Feb. 15 heard from Public Works Director Kelly Cowan, who discussed damages to a light panel, basketball backboards, and rims and court fencing in recent weeks.
Cowan and police Chief Shad Prichard placed the blame on out-of-town visitors.
According to Prichard, many of the out-of-town visitors to Hollywood Park’s public basketball court tend to go there at night in groups, play loud music from their vehicles or mobile devices, and intimidate other court users.
“We get a lot of people coming in here because we have a public park from the surrounding area. A lot of them are older teenagers and in their 20s, and they have no respect for your property,” Cowan told the council.
Mayor Pro Tem Delaine Hall, presiding over the council meeting in Mayor Oscar Villarreal’s absence, suggested immediately removing the basketball hoops and possibly converting the court into a pickleball court.
According to Hall and some city officials, a rising number of Hollywood Park residents enjoy playing pickleball and would like to be able to play it at the Voigt Park court.
“It seems to be something that a lot of people enjoy,” Hall said.
But other council members said they want Cowan to return with other options.
Council Member Glenna Pearce agreed that the city should increase safety around the basketball court but disagreed with the idea of totally jettisoning basketball use.
Pearce instead asked Cowan to see what will it take to modify lines or anything else at the court to accommodate both basketball and pickleball players.
“It’s the least expensive way to do it,” Pearce said. “This is one of those places that’s multipurpose.”
