A classical music concert, two art exhibits, pet adoption programs and a fundraiser walk are options among various events scheduled around San Antonio during the second weekend of September.

Sept. 8

Caritas Concerts, featuring organ and choral music performances, begins a new season with a show at the Chapel of the Incarnate Word with mezzo-soprano Jacquelyn Matava and organist Samuel Gaskin in a program called “Sacred Song.” Their recital celebrates Christian, Jewish and Hindu religions in works such as Vierne’s “Les Angélus;” Holst’s “Vedic Hymns Book I;” selections from Darius Milhaud’s “Poèmes juifs;” improvisations; and works by Purcell, Dove and others.

Sept. 8-Oct. 18

Centro Cultural Aztlan will host the exhibit “Jorge Sandoval–Fotos Y Recuerdos,” a culmination of the local artist’s 45 years documenting the world around him and dedicating himself to preserving and promoting Chicano art. Sandoval is a San Antonio local photographer, filmmaker, producer and writer.

The San Antonio Walk for PKD will benefit the PKD Foundation, research into polycystic kidney disease, and resources for patients and their families. This family-friendly event will include kids’ activities, a health fair with representatives from the local medical community, tables for several organizations related to kidney disease, and food donated by local businesses before and after the walk.

Sept. 9

Students from CAST Schools will perform "Three Years of Fear," a play based on the book “Tafolla Toro” by Lorenzo Gomez III, a San Antonio native and co-founder of the WeTree mental health app. The play and book emphasize the importance of mental health and advances conversations among students, families, and the community about mental health issues of fear, anxiety, and violence.

Musical Bridges Around the World Art Gallery will host an opening reception for “Natural Order,” an exhibit of photos by Robert Michaelson, Kyle Petersen and Barbra Riley. The exhibit, being held in conjunction with San Antonio’s Fotoseptiembre celebration of photography, runs through Nov. 17.
