Three local theatrical arts groups open a new season of plays and musicals to highlight events happening Sept. 8-17.

Sept. 8-25

The Classic Theatre of San Antonio kicks off a new season with performances of “Roosters,” a drama about a father, Gallo, who wants to exploit his family's fighting rooster, which his son has been looking after, and Hector, his son, who argues that they should sell the animal and use the proceeds for family needs. 7:30 p.m. Thursdays-Sundays through Sept. 25. $24-$39. Sept. 9-Oct. 2

The Public Theater of San Antonio presents performances of “American Mariachi.” In this play set in the 1970s, Lucha spends her days caring for her ailing mother but wants to shake up her life. When a forgotten record sparks her mother’s memory, Lucha and her cousin are inspired to create an all-female mariachi band. Magik Theater presents performances of “Selena Maria Sings,” a musical about a superfan of the late singer Selena who seeks to follow in her idol’s footsteps and become a pop star. Visitors at Phil Hardberger Park may stop by the park’s Salado Classroom, walk some park trails and view inspiration before returning to the classroom to work with precollected natural materials to create an artwork. Art supplies will be provided, but attendees may bring their own. No art experience necessary.
