By the end of August, Shavano Park residents will be able to visit a new farmers market happening in town each Sunday, event organizers said.

City Council on July 25 approved the creation of The Market @ Shavano, which will take place 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Sundays along part of Saddletree Court next to the City Hall/police station complex, organizer David Richie said.

Richie said, if all goes well, the new Shavano Park farmers market can begin taking place Sept. 4.

According to City Manager Bill Hill, Richie approached Shavano Park with a proposal to consolidate an existing farmers market at 16607 Huebner Road in San Antonio’s Deerfield neighborhood with the Live Oak Farmers’ Market.

Richie said he had to close the Live Oak market after losing the market location to the Texas Department of Transportation, which is using that site as staging ground for the recently launched I-35 expansion project.

Richie told the Shavano Park council that 20-30 vendors are scheduled to take part in the new farmers market any given Sunday. The market will operate year-round, rain or shine, except for an occasional freeze, Richie said.

According to Richie, the vendor fee is $25 per market day with $5 going to the host site—the city in this case—and $10 going to market management. The rest of the fee goes to marketing and advertising, Richie said.

Richie said the market will offer a mix of farmers and ranchers, small local businesses, and artisans and crafters.

“It’s a plethora of farmers and business owners,” Richie said, adding the Live Oak Farmers’ Market averaged a few hundred people per week.

Hill said because the The Market @ Shavano will be self-sufficient, there will be no need for city employees to staff activities on a weekly basis.

Vendors and visitors will be able to use the portable bathroom located in the public pavilion in the center of the Saddletree Court parking lot, Hill said.

According to the market proposal, the market will cover 22 existing parking spaces. More than 60 other parking spaces will be available on-site for market attendees with another 50-plus parking spaces in the unpaved overflow parking area accessible by DeZavala Road.

Council members voiced support for a farmers market launching in Shavano Park with some city leaders saying many residents are excited about having a local market in their town.

“It’s a great concept,” Council Member Pete Miller said.
