March 2 is Texas Independence Day, and San Antonio residents and visitors will get to celebrate the adoption of the Texas Declaration of Independence by enjoying a variety of activities downtown.

According to Gov. Greg Abbott’s office, Texas Independence Day marks the date when 59 settlers and delegates formally declared Texas’ independence from Mexico and created the Republic of Texas in 1836.

The Alamo is the scene of several local events commemorating the fight for independence from Mexico, officials with The Alamo said.

There will be activities at the Alamo, 300 Alamo Plaza, including living history demonstrations and performances by local school students, throughout the day March 2 from 9 a.m.-4 p.m.

Elsewhere, Pinkerton’s BBQ, 107 W. Houston St., will host a Texas Independence Day event 5-9 p.m. March 2 in partnership with Hye, Texas-based Garrison Brothers Distillery and Texas Exes, The University of Texas alumni association.

According to Pinkerton’s BBQ, the event will include live music from the Abe Mac Bank. Food and drink sales proceeds will go to Good Bourbon for a Good Cause, which distributes funds to charitable organizations in Blanco and Gillespie counties, and to nonprofits that support current and former U.S. military personnel.

Maverick Whiskey, 115 Broadway St., named after Texas Declaration of Independence signer Sam Maverick, said it is inviting the public to view Maverick family history and enjoy offerings at the downtown distillery March 2.


According to a distillery news release, Maverick Whiskey’s restaurant and bar tasting room is open 2-9 p.m. with happy hour 3-6 p.m.

Public tours will begin at 6 p.m., and the retail shop with Maverick Whiskey spirits and merchandise will be open noon-9 p.m.
