Early voting for the May 28 runoff elections for local Republican and Democratic candidates will take place May 20-24 in Bexar County.

The background

Runoffs are held to determine a winner in March 5 primaries where the top two vote-getters failed to receive more than 50% of the vote in their respective race, according to state election officials.

Republican voters in Congressional District 23 will be asked to vote in the runoff between incumbent Tony Gonzales, who seeks a third term in office, and entrepreneur Brandon Herrera.

In the March 5 GOP primary, Gonzales led a five-candidate field with 47.2% of the vote, followed by Herrera with 24.4%.

Congressional District 23 stretches from parts of north, west and south San Antonio and Bexar County, into the Rio Grande Valley and along the U.S./Mexican border to El Paso. The district includes Shavano Park, the Rogers Ranch neighborhood and portions of the Stone Oak area.

Dig deeper

Other GOP runoffs affecting some Bexar County voters include Congressional District 28 where Lazaro Garza is facing Jay Furman. The winner will oppose incumbent Democrat Henry Cuellar in the November general election.

Cuellar and his wife, Imelda, were indicted on April 30 on charges of accepting payments from Azerbaijan's state-run oil and gas business in exchange for pushing U.S. policy in favor of Azerbaijan, according to a news release from the U.S. Department of Justice.

Additionally, Republican voters in Congressional District 35 may cast a ballot in a runoff between Michael Rodriguez and Steven Wright. The winner will face incumbent Democrat Greg Casar.

There are two runoffs on the Democratic ballot in Bexar County—a contest between incumbent Rebeca Clay-Flores and challenger Amanda Gonzalez for Precinct 1 county commissioner, and a race for 73rd Judicial District judge between Ana Laura Ramirez and Elizabeth Martinez.
