Northside ISD trustees Aug. 22 approved an almost $1.03 billion general fund budget for the 2023-24 school year. Projecting $998.5 million in revenues, Northside ISD officials said they are planning to be $29 million in the red in the new academic year.

More background

NISD officials said the new budget is the district’s biggest general fund budget, as the board last year adapted a $985 million budget for the 2022-23 school year.

However, NISD's new budget contains a $29 million shortfall as Northside officials cited lack of a significant increase in state funding for public education and NISD allocating money to open new schools.

NISD officials said 83% of the new general fund budget is directed to instruction, school leadership and student support. The new budget also includes a $24.8 million increase in employee compensation.

Additionally, the board authorized the district to create 20 new school police officer positions in an effort to enhance campus safety.

Trustees also approved a new total property tax rate of $1.01 per $100 valuation.
