District 23 U.S. Rep. Tony Gonzales, R-San Antonio, recently said he submitted a $4.6 million community project funding request, which, if approved, could help shore up safety in North East ISD.

Current situation

In a news release, Gonzales pitched the funding request to the House of Representatives Appropriations Committee, of which he is a member.

He said approved funding would support school safety and security infrastructure upgrades, training for NEISD law enforcement, and essential equipment to protect students in case of a campus emergency.

The House Appropriations Committee is due to send to the full House of Representatives the last of its appropriations bills on June 10.

What they’re saying

Gonzales, who represents a congressional district stretching from the North San Antonio area through West Texas, said the funding request is meant to make a vital difference in the community. He added that protecting students on campus is a top priority.

"In Congress, I’ve helped deliver millions of dollars to school districts across South and West Texas, and the nation to improve school safety. Through my seat on the House Appropriations Committee, I look forward to working in Congress to get this funding over the finish line and deliver for NEISD,” he said in a statement.

Sean Maika, NEISD superintendent, said he and fellow district officials are committed to implementing additional layers of security to bolster protection, response and safe recovery in the event of a school emergency.

“Congressman Gonzales reached out to see how he could help improve school safety, and the community project funding request he selected will allow us to respond more quickly and effectively to active shooters, improve officer safety and training as well as provide necessary resources for campus response,” Maika said in a statement.
