The Alamo Colleges District is now offering scholarships for its UpSkill/Career Academy to students enrolled with coding bootcamp Codeup as a result of the bootcamp’s sudden recent closure.

The background

Officials with Codeup emailed employees and students Dec. 28 that the venture was immediately shutting down all operations due in part to adverse economic conditions and lack of funding.

According to a Jan. 5 news release, students who were unable to finish their coursework with Codeup may visit ACD's new Codeup page to request six-month access to the online, on-demand courses through ACD. Proof of recent enrollment at Codeup will be required.

Students may pursue one or more professional certificates in 30 careers, including front-end developer, data analyst, data scientist and IT project manager, the release states. Additionally, the district will provide a dedicated enrollment coach to support each former Codeup student.

ACD officials also said partnering with Coursera, an online learning platform, can help students prepare for a new career in a high-growth field and can help workers develop new skills or expand existing skills quickly based on completing work weekly according to course suggestions.

What they’re saying

ACD Chancellor Mike Flores said he and fellow district leaders are proud to aid Codeup students through ACD’s partnership programs.

“We have invested in our microcredentialing infrastructure for moments like these when students need a quality, on-demand learning experience,” Flores said in a statement.
