Bexar County commissioners on March 21 approved grant agreements that allow three local school districts, including North East ISD, to receive American Rescue Plan Act funds to expand their mental health programs.

North East ISD is receiving $2.63 million in federal COVID-19 relief money, whereas Comal ISD is receiving $246,000, and Judson ISD is receiving $1.07 million, county officials said.

County staff said the newly approved grant funds, which must be allocated by Dec. 31, 2026, will be used to help increase access to mental health professionals for students and families in these school districts.

This includes hiring social workers and support staff as well as contracting with a local vendor to provide additional licensed mental health professionals, according to the county.

NEISD officials said students already have access to a certified school counselor and student well-being/mental wellness counselors, who can offer one-on-one or small group counseling.

NEISD also partners with UT Health San Antonio to offer students services through Texas Child Health Access Through Telemedicine.
