San Antonio’s North East and Northside ISDs have both announced plans to continue providing free school breakfasts and lunches over the summer.

NEISD will provide free breakfasts and lunches to children age 18 and younger at 31 campuses during June and July, according to a school district news release.

“We know that hunger doesn’t end with the school year,” said Sharon Glosson, executive director of NEISD School Nutrition Services. “More than half of the families in NEISD are considered economically disadvantaged and depend on school meals for daily nutrition. The summer meal program gives children access to nutritious meals all summer.

According to NEISD Superintendent Sean Maika, meals will not be available for curbside pickup like during the COVID-19 pandemic, but students can eat inside participating schools, said.

In the fall, when school resumes, families will need to qualify for free or reduced-price lunches because Congress did not renew the “pandemic-era waiver'' that provided free meals for students, Maikaa said.

Summer Food Service Program meals will be served at various times on weekdays, according to location, through June and July. These participating area campuses offer meals 7:30-8:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m.-1 p.m.:

  • Colonial Hills Elementary School, 2627 Kerrybrook Court (through July 1 and July 18-28);

  • Huebner Elementary School, 16311 Huebner Road (through July 1);

  • Oak Meadow Elementary School, 2800 Hunters Green (through July 1); and

  • Redland Oaks Elementary School, 16650 Redland Road (through July 1).
