On June 12, the San Antonio City Council approved $12 million in funding for two significant affordable housing projects.

The gist

According to a news release, the funding will be used to build and preserve 368 rental homes, including 161 affordable units for households earning at or below 50% of the area median income.

Funded by the voter-approved 2022 Affordable Housing Bond, the housing developments include 40-year affordability covenants and on-site resident services. Additionally, the residences will also be within a quarter-mile proximity to the future Rapid Silver Line.

Additionally, the newly approved housing will bring the total number of housing created under the 2022 Affordable Housing Bond to over 4,600 affordable homes, including more than 1,100 completed and 2,500 currently under construction.

2022 Affordable Housing Bond housing projects include:
  • 368 affordable homes
  • 207 family-sized rental units
  • Two transit-oriented developments in the urban core
  • Services-focused housing, including case management, job training and after-school care
  • Preservation of 48 rental homes

What else?

The vote is also in line with the Strategic Housing Implementation Plan, which was adopted by City Council in 2018.

SHIP’s five primary goals:

  • Ensure accountability to the public
Quote of note
