The background
April Chang is the co-director of the Mitchell Chang Foundation, a local nonprofit she started with her husband Marvin Chang, to honor the life of their son Mitchell, who drowned at a San Antonio swimming school in 2018.
The foundation raised $2.2 million to cover the creation of a free-use, public playground uniquely designed to accommodate kids of all ages and abilities. The city of San Antonio Parks and Recreation department also funded the project.
First look
Mitchell’s Landing is based on his love of pirates. On Nov. 24, the Chang family welcomed families for a soft opening event.
The playground features four play areas, including the H-E-B mermaid lagoon, an abandoned mission, a pirate ship and a marsh bog. Other features include a sensory play TriRunner swing, a scavenger hunt swings. The multigenerational playground is completely shaded and has a soft ground surface to prevent injuries.
One more thing
On the grand opening day, Mitchell’s Landing will have activities like face painting, a baby goat petting area, a sensory tent and bubble station, pirate characters and a pirate costume contest for kids.
Guests can park and ride at Methodist Stone Oak Hospital from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. or park and walk from Las Lomas Elementary School.
