Not far from Johnson High School on Bulverde Road, the owners of The Healthy Spot SATX said they are serving up nearly 40 flavors of protein shakes and more than 20 varieties of energy drinks—all made to order.

Owners Delma and Dean Ferris, and Anthony Bernal said they hope their shop helps people improve their health.

A native of Hondo, Delma said when she and her husband, Dean, served in the military, they ate all kinds of food around the world. But in civilian life, she and her husband sought to change their diets and exercise to develop healthier lifestyles.

In 2018 they met Bernal, a fellow Hondo native, who introduced the Ferrises to an array of healthy protein shakes and energy teas, protein waffles, and a workout routine that helped him lose weight.

Delma said as a result she lost 37 pounds, cut out many bad foods, lowered her blood pressure and cholesterol, and eliminated a need to take insulin.

In 2022 the Ferrises and Bernal met Shaun Morton, who originally opened The Healthy Spot SATX in 2020. They shared a love for healthy dining and exercising, Delma said.

In April 2023, the Ferrises and Bernal took Morton up on his offer to sell The Healthy Spot SATX as he opened a nutritional drink shop in Dripping Springs.

Delma said she and Bernal like to make it easy for visitors of all ages to enjoy an assortment of nutritious drinks, waffles and other items.

“Every time somebody walks in the door, it is a brand new story,” Delma said. “It’s so inspirational to me, and I hope to help the community with this store.”

Delma said the energy drinks are designed to be energizing. They are based on green or black tea extracts, and feature vitamin B12, electrolytes, collagen and varying levels of caffeine. Flavors include Boss Babe with strawberry and watermelon, and Volcano Blast with cherry, raspberry, pineapple and orange.

Low-carbohydrate, low-calorie, high-protein shakes have 250 calories, 24 grams of protein, 18 grams of carbohydrates and 21 essential nutrients. Other flavors include cookie dough, butter pecan, red velvet and strawberry banana. The Healthy Spot also offers iced protein coffee and protein bars.

Delma said some guests get a beverage before or after a workout, and others use the shakes as a meal replacement.

“I like to say that these drinks are positive, have intent and are magical,” she said.

The Healthy Spot SATX also offers a weekly kettlebell class, free to anyone who buys a drink. Guests may bring their own kettlebell or borrow one available on-site.

Additionally, The Healthy Spot is available to work with area businesses and schools on community initiatives, and deliver large orders of drinks to neighboring schools, Delma said.

Delma and Bernal said the drinks, kettlebell classes and offers for community collaboration are all part of their effort to help keep their neighborhood healthy and nurtured.

“We came into this because of our personal health and didn’t realize at the beginning there was an opportunity to help others. Once we became aware of that, it’s a win-win situation. We help ourselves, and now we have others who have joined in our journey to better health," Bernal added.
