Sheila Macdonald, owner of The Knitter’s Nook in north central San Antonio, recalls 1985, when her doctor ordered bed rest as she awaited the birth of her first child, Jeff.

Her then-mother-in-law gave her some crocheting and knitting supplies to help her to pass the time.

“[My mother-in-law thought] maybe this will give me something to do since I was stuck in bed. I tried crocheting. It didn’t feel quite right, so I took up knitting, taught myself, and I’ve been knitting ever since,” Macdonald said

Macdonald, who is also a registered nurse, said knitting is more than a beloved hobby. It inspired a secondary source of income with Macdonald learning to hand-dye fibers to sell at craft fairs.

Macdonald said she long considered having a yarn shop to share her love of knitting, crocheting and fiber weaving as well as transitioning from nursing.

In mid-2021, things fell into place for Macdonald to realize her dream. Following a search for locations, Macdonald found a space in a Churchill Estates neighborhood retail center and opened The Knitter’s Nook in July.

The shop offers a variety of light-, medium- and heavy-weight yarns from different yarn brands; knitting and crocheting books; patterns; needles; hooks; notions; and her hand-dyed yarn. Customers may choose a free pattern with a yarn purchase.

Macdonald said through her business, she enjoys meeting people who share her appreciation for knitting and crocheting.

“It’s a great hobby. It’s stress free, and there’s a nice community of knitters,” she said.

Additionally, starting at around 6 p.m. each Thursday, The Knitter’s Nook welcomes a knitting group in which between one and 10 guests come and work on their knitting project, improve their skills, exchange tips, swap jokes, and enjoy complimentary coffee or tea.

“That’s the community part of knitting—one of the things about it that I truly enjoy,” Macdonald said.
