The PainSmith, a new interventional pain management clinic in Stone Oak, began receiving patients Nov. 1 at 731 Carnoustie Drive, Ste. 102, San Antonio.
According to representatives for the new north San Antonio clinic, practitioner Dr. Zack Smith works closely with patients to build an individualized, comprehensive plan to treat nearly every type of pain, including knee, back and spine, joint, headache and migraine, post-surgical, post-traumatic stress disorder, and neuropathy pain, choosing from a range of nonsurgical and minimally invasive procedures.
Early in his collegiate career, Smith earned an undergraduate degree in electrical engineering from The University of Texas, during which time he worked as a civilian for the U.S. Navy conducting sonar research.
After working for an engineering firm in Houston, Smith switched to a health care career, earning a doctorate with distinction in research at The University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio.
Smith then completed an internship in neurosurgery, a residency in anesthesiology and a fellowship in pain medicine at The University of Nebraska Medical Center.
Representatives for The PainSmith said Smith, while in residency and fellowship, was part of a study that performed interventional pain procedures as salvage therapy for critically ill COVID-19 patients.
Clinic representatives said, after moving back to Texas, Smith practiced pain management in a large medical group, and then decided to open his own practice in San Antonio.
