Officials with Texas Medical Legal Consultants, based near Shavano Park, said on Oct. 25 it had been recently honored by the Texas Association of Business as one of the best places to work in Texas.

According to a news release, Texas Medical Legal Consultants ranked third in the Small Employer category (15-99 U.S. employees), and ranked fourth overall. This annual award recognizes businesses that provide a thriving and successful climate for their employees, the release said.

Launched in 2010, Texas Medical Legal Consultants manages medical legal work on behalf of medical experts nationwide.

The firm said it aims to help decrease the health care professional’s nonbillable time, minimize the risk of miscommunication with their clinical staff, expand attorney access to the expert and simplify the retention process for all parties in legal proceedings.

TxMLC was also recently recognized as one of the fastest growing private U.S. companies by the Inc. 5000 list. Additionally, it was named the No. 1 expert witness provider in San Antonio, Austin, Houston and Dallas, as voted by Texas Attorneys, the release said.

According to the release, the company’s founders, co-owners and co-presidents, Elizabeth Labarge and Kathryn Goertz, were the sole full-time employees for the first seven years. A 138% revenue growth over the last five years resulted in the need to increase their staff to 33 people.

Officials with TxMLC said, while growing their business, they have sought to offer a proactive, nurturing, positive environment for their employees by offering career development opportunities, adding new benefits, investing significantly in payroll and promoting from within the company.

The release said, upon the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, TxMLC set up employees with laptops, screens and printers to facilitate virtual in-home work, helping staffers to maintain a significant effort to provide social gatherings for their team. These social gatherings remain an essential part of TxMLC’s culture, with weekly coffee dates with employees, regular team lunches and company retreats, the release said.

Labarge said professionally fulfilled employees are the best solution for taking care of clients.

“Our team is the backbone of client interaction and experience. As other companies opted for a mandatory return to in-office work, we surveyed our team and collectively decided on full flexibility for our employees' place of work. A great side benefit: it has permitted us to hire talent outside of San Antonio for the first time,” Labarge said.

Goertz said TxMLC takes pride in investing in its employees’ well-being and providing opportunities for growth within the company, which plans to continue growth and expansion in 2023 and beyond.

“With a remote-first work environment, we have provided employees with flexibility and fulfillment. Our executive team continues to work on programs to make TxMLC a forever home to its employees and the best place to work in South Texas,” Goertz said.
