The McKenna Foundation board of trustees approved $108,000 in grants during its final grant making session for 2024, bringing the year’s total grants to over $1.4 million.

The funds were distributed to nine nonprofits within its Family Relationships Portfolio—supporting programs for seniors, children, youth and families in the New Braunfels area, according to a Nov. 11 news release from the nonprofit.

The specifics

Some of the organizations receiving funding include:
  • Bulverde Spring Branch Activity Center: Awarded $22,500 to support programs for older adults and the Meals on Wheels initiative, which serves approximately 87 rural Comal County residents. The program addresses nutrition, health and socialization for seniors.
  • Project 10:27: Received $8,000 to combat senior isolation through programs promoting physical, mental and emotional well-being.
  • 1HOPE for Kids: Approved for $10,000 to assist foster care efforts. The nonprofit has facilitated over 340 adoptions, helped 480 children reunite with families and trained over 400 foster families.
  • New Braunfels Angels: Granted $7,500 to expand the Dare to Dream mentorship program for foster youth at risk of aging out of the system. The program addresses rising mental health challenges among foster youth with trauma-informed care.
The impact

Since 2009, the foundation has granted nearly $30 million to local nonprofits, according to the release.

In August, the McKenna Foundation distributed $575,000 for basic needs and $564,000 for education and health initiatives.

The foundation will continue supporting nonprofits in 2025 to address critical community needs and foster long-term impact, according to the statement.
