The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, or TCEQ, is holding a public meeting Oct. 2 for a proposed permit that requests the authorization to dispose of 460,000 gallons of treated domestic wastewater on 117 acres of public access land to serve a new residential development.

Two-minute impact

This permit—proposed by Chesmar Homes and the Guadalupe-Blanco River Authority—would be for a wastewater treatment facility and disposal site located 3.5 miles west of the FM 2722 and Hwy. 46 intersection in New Braunfels, according to a news release from the Greater Edwards Aquifer Alliance, or GEAA.

GEAA is a nonprofit organization that works to promote broad-based advocacy protections and preservations of the Edwards Aquifer. The proposed facility and disposal site would be located in the drainage basin of the Comal River and in a segment of the Guadalupe River Basin, the release states.

The first segment of the meeting is for questions, and public comments will commence during the second part of the meeting.

Offering input

GEAA members said they had concerns with the permit application relating to the degradation of the drainage basin of the Comal River, Edwards Aquifer and area water wells that would likely occur with the irrigation of treated sewage within the proposed development area.

“GEAA, therefore, requests a contested case hearing for this application,” the nonprofit’s comments state.
