Comal County is investing $160,000 in a new flood warning system comprised of nine sensors at Canyon Lake and 16 sensors at low-water crossings throughout the county.

The details

Comal County and the Water Oriented Recreation District of Comal County are collaborating to launch a flood warning system, said Comal County Engineer Robert Boyd at an Oct. 31 Comal County Commissioners Court meeting.

Boyd said the systems features include:
  • Nine high-water sensors along the Guadalupe River
  • Automated alert systems at crucial low-water crossings
These sensors will monitor real-time conditions to provide alerts when water levels rise quickly, ultimately reducing risk during flash floods and enhancing safety in frequently affected areas, Boyd said.

Zooming in

Comal County's flood warning system will cost $160,000 annually to maintain, Boyd said, and the Water Oriented Recreation District will contribute $53,000 per year.

Comal County will fund the remaining portion and take responsibility for all hardware maintenance.

The system serves both locals and visitors, Boyd said, by:
  • Alerting residents to flood risks
  • Warning drivers at low-water crossings
  • Improving emergency response
  • Enhancing flood preparedness and awareness
The two-year agreement includes a renewal option for both Comal County and the Water Oriented Recreation District, Boyd said, with installation underway and full operation expected in the coming months.
