How we got here
The transition in leadership comes after Chief of Police Keith Lane announced his retirement earlier this month. His last day will be Oct. 31, said City Manager Robert Camareno at the meeting.
Camareno recognized Lane’s service and accomplishments, emphasizing the positive impact he has had on the department and community.
Going forward
To maintain continuity, Camareno recommended Blevins for the interim position, citing Blevins’ knowledge of the department and dedication to stepping up in a time of transition.
Blevins has been with the NBPD since 2007, and became assistant chief on June 26.
Camareno noted that civil service statutes and the city charter grant him the authority to make such appointments, though state law requires City Council confirmation. Council voted unanimously to confirm Blevins for the interim position.
Blevins will be in charge of the department while the city undergoes a comprehensive selection process for a permanent Chief of Police, Camareno said.
