Comal County has postponed its anticipated burn ban after recent rains improved drought conditions, lowering the Keetch-Byram Drought Index below the critical threshold.

The update

County officials said recent rains helped drought conditions, but they will monitor the situation.

A burn ban was scheduled to begin on May 31, but it was postponed due to recent rain in the area.

Recent rainfall reduced the KBDI to 451, according to Water Data for Texas, below the critical level of 500 necessary for imposing a burn ban.

Officials will continue to monitor weather conditions and the KBDI, which could lead to the implementation of a burn ban if conditions worsen.

Looking ahead

Weather reports in the area predict rainfall this weekend and if that occurs, officials said the burn ban could be postponed even longer.

“If that rain doesn't happen, [the burn ban] could definitely, probably be on by next Friday," Fire Marshal Kory Klabunde said.
