The New Braunfels Noon Lions Club gathered Aug. 15 to honor local first responders during their annual Sheriff James Robert Holder First Responder Awards luncheon.

The event celebrated three members from the Comal County Sheriff’s Office, New Braunfels Police Department, and the New Braunfels Fire Department for their service and dedication to the community.

The New Braunfels Noon Lions Club is a local chapter of the Lions Club International, dedicated to community service, volunteerism, and philanthropic efforts in New Braunfels.

The details

This years August Hampe Police Officer of the Year, the Ernest Alves Jr. Firefighter of the Year, and the Ed Murphy Memorial Deputy of the Year awards were presented to:
  • Deputy Carl Heintz of the Comal County Sheriff’s Office
  • Officer Andrew Kempker of the New Braunfels Police Department
  • Firefighter Jorge Alonso of the New Braunfels Fire Department
Heintz was honored for saving a 6-year-old girl who was choking in the cafeteria at Morningside Elementary School on April 18.

"I'm proud, as could be, to wear this uniform and to represent people of Comal County," Heintz said. "My attention is drawn where it needs to be every day, ... and it happens that this girl began choking within arm's reach of me...thankfully we were able to resolve that quickly."

Kempker was recognized for his service even after being diagnosed with cancer in January 2023. Despite undergoing treatment, Kempker continued to work, transferring to the administrative division where he has taken on multiple roles.

“Sgt. Kempker’s positive attitude and work ethic continue to be an inspiration to everyone he comes into contact with,” said COmal County Sheriff Mark Reynolds.

Alonso was honored for his positive attitude and willingness to volunteer in various capacities, said Fire Chief Ruy Lozano of the New Braunfels Fire Department.

“Serving in New Braunfels has been a great experience. ... I moved here two years after joining the department because I loved the community," Alonso said. "I plan to stay and continue contributing for many years.”
