The details
The relocation of Lamar Elementary to 158 Word Parkway follows recommendations from the Long Range Facilities Planning Committee, according to the Aug. 7 news release. Superintendent Laurelyn Arterbury highlighted the decision as a solution to capacity issues, providing the best educational environment for students.
The new facility is part of the district's 2021 bond program, designed to address population growth in the area, as per the release.
The new campus will open in fall 2025 and is expected to accommodate up to 750 students, as previously reported by Community Impact.
“The growth in this area continues to rise and with that forms the need for more space,” Arterbury said.
How we got here
The groundbreaking for the new school occurred on May 9, and the construction is being managed by Bartlett Cocke General Contractors.
NBISD decided to relocate Lamar Elementary to the new campus for these reasons, according to the release:
- Overcrowding: The current school is too small for the growing number of students.
- Modern facilities: The new campus will feature updated and improved learning spaces.
- Cost savings: Relocating avoids additional expenses for new staff and resources.
- Preserving tradition: The move will maintain the school’s legacy in a new building.
- Long-term planning: The decision follows recommendations from a planning committee to address future needs.
The construction is on track for the campus to open for the 2025-26 school year, according to the release.
The district will continue to use the current Lamar Elementary building until the relocation, after which the building will be repurposed based on further recommendations from the Long Range Facilities Planning Committee, as per the release.
