Chris Norris, owner of Southern Maid, said he opened the shop because of how much he loved visiting Southern Maid with his grandpa back home in North Texas.

“My grandfather would take me in the mornings to Southern Maid in Wichita Falls when I was about 13 until they closed,” Norris said. “I hadn’t seen a shop since I was in the Navy and saw a Southern Maid in Dickinson, Texas."

Norris had the opportunity to talk to Lon Hargrove, son of Southern Maid founder JB and Rosalee Hargrove.

“He was an Air Force pilot, and I was a Navy pilot, and so we hit it off. He said he didn’t mind if I opened one in New Braunfels,” he said.

On the menu

The shop offers standard and cake donuts with specialty toppings like orange glazed, Oreo, cereal, sprinkles and bacon. Kolaches are their most popular item, Norris said. Their sausage is smoked by Granzin Bar-B-Que. Their menu will soon incorporate breakfast bagel sandwiches.

On the coffee side, Norris incorporates specialty coffee drinks from Güte coffee.

Drinks like the Hippie!!!, S’mores latte, and Nutella latte are in-house made items. They also serve energy drink teas.

“My vision is to be a coffee shop with donuts,” he says.

Southern Maid is open Tuesday-Saturday from 6 a.m.-2 p.m. Their new evening ours are 3-8 p.m.
