Some context
Market Plaza was originally a central market for German immigrants, which evolved into a community space where people would gather. In the mid-20th century, the land was transformed into a park at the request of city members, according to a news release.
Market Plaza and the city joined together with the Comal County Historical Commission and the New Braunfels Park Foundation to commemorate the historical land. New Braunfels has 60 historical markers, with Market Plaza being the newest one.
Cindy Coers, Comal County Historical Commission Chair, highlighted the importance of the land and its history, along with the process to get the landmark approved.
“It [the park] was very essential to the survival of the immigrants who came in. It’s important to understand that history and how it's evolved,” Coers told Community Impact. “Normally, it's a 2-year process from the time the application is submitted, and this one was about four years and was approved in 2021.”
Notable quote
Chad Donegan, parks and recreation director, said he and his parks administration and operations team were grateful to have helped with the landmark.
“We're so grateful for this park and being right near downtown and the history that has served this community,”Donegan said.
What else?
There are 142 historical markers in the county, and around 10 that the Historical Commission is currently working on getting approved, Coers said.
“Over the next couple of years, we'll see about 10 more up in the county and hopefully start helping other sponsors work on these,” Coers said.
