New Braunfels locals to convert downtown historic building into Irish bar

New Braunfels locals Kyle Kennedy, Lalita Kennedy and Joseph Collins will be converting The Voigt House—one of New Braunfels’ oldest historic buildings—into an Irish bar called Kennedy’s Tavern this fall.

The project, located at 308 E. San Antonio St., is being engineered by Dillo Development Services. The architect on the project is ArtArch LLC, and the general contractor on the project is Contractor Kyle LLC.

The Voigt House was recorded as a Texas Historic Landmark in 1973 and deeded to Herman Seele. Seele was the first schoolmaster of Texas that lived in one part of the home, Kyle said.

Comedy club opens inside existing New Braunfels restaurant

A new comedy club named Tom's Comedy Club opened within the existing Tommy John's Tailgate restaurant at the beginning of March.


Tom's Comedy Club holds weekly comedy shows on Friday and Saturday with open mic night's on Tuesday. Patrons attending a show can also order food and drinks from the restaurant's menu.

Custom mac'n cheese joint coming soon to New Braunfels

A custom mac'n cheese joint called S’MAC’n Noodles is opening in New Braunfels at 1515 N. Walnut Ave.


The details

S’MAC’n Noodles—owned by husband and wife duo James Acosta and Danni Lopez—will offer custom macaroni and cheese, salads and more.

Acosta said S'MAC'n Noodles makes everything from scratch and also offer gluten free and vegan cheeses and noodles.

The Hungry Waffle opens in New Braunfels

The Hungry Waffle, located at 1760 S. Business I-35, opened Jan. 12.

The waffle truck is locally owned by Jennifer Casillas and her fiancé Adam Tekien. The Hungry Waffle offers Leige, Belgian and Bubble Waffles.

Willy B’s Burgers and Pizza closes in New Braunfels

Willy B’s Burgers and Pizza closed its doors in New Braunfels after 12 years, according to a social media post.

The details

The restaurant—which was known for its brunch menu, handcrafted pizzas and burgers—is now home to cottage bakery Dough-Re-Mi.

"We are so grateful for your support over the years and can’t wait to continue sharing our love of baking and family with you in this new way," the post states.

All-you-can-eat sushi restaurant opens in New Braunfels

A new Japanese restaurant has opened in New Braunfels, bringing residents all-you-can-eat sushi.

Yasaka Sushi & Ramen opened Dec. 1 at 1348 I-35 N., New Braunfels, next to Olive Garden.

The building previously housed a Denny’s restaurant, which closed in 2024, according to previous reporting from Community Impact.

Costco Wholesale eyes New Braunfels for new location

A Costco may be on the horizon for New Braunfels residents.

What we know

In an email to Community Impact, Costco's Regional Marketing Manager Kerry Carbullido said they would be opening a location in New Braunfels at some point in the future, but do not yet have an opening timeframe.

The company is looking to build a store at the southeast corner of the Mayfair development—more specifically at the corner of Kohlenberg Road and I-35. Mayfair is a 1,888-acre mixed-use community that broke ground in the extraterritorial jurisdiction of New Braunfels, according to previous reporting by Community Impact.

Academy Sports + Outdoors now open in New Braunfels

A nationwide sporting goods chain has opened a new location along the I-35 corridor.

The overview

Academy Sports + Outdoors opened in New Braunfels at 159 I-35 S. on Nov. 16, according to a news release. The storefront is next to DD’s Discounts, in the Courtyard Plaza shopping center.

At just a little over 43,000-square-feet, the New Braunfels location is the store's ninth location in the San Antonio region, according to the store's locator. The retailer will bring about 60 jobs to the city, the release states.

Taziki's Mediterranean Cafe coming soon to New Braunfels

A new restaurant called Taziki's Mediterranean Cafe is opening a location at 1058 FM 306, Ste. 104, in New Braunfels on April 1.

The franchise is owned by locals Cole Leinneweber, Mark Parmerlee and Lexie Leinneweber. Taziki's will serve homemade dips, gyros, salad bowls and soups.
