Michelle Rexilius and her husband, Rex, began their journey of candle making from home before opening a candle shop named New Braunfels Candle and Crystal Co. in March 2016.

How it happened

The decision to open a storefront came after their hobby began to overload their home, and as entrepreneurs, the couple decided to take on a challenge by opening a new business, Rexilius said.

“It's hard to go back and think about how small we were then and where we are now,” she said.

What they offer

The candle shop sells a wide range of candles in different scents such as Strawberry Fields, Rosemary Sage and River Rain.

New Braunfels Candle and Crystal Co. also hosts pouring parties, where groups of up to 18 individuals can customize a candle. Participants will be guided through the process of making a candle to take home.

Incorporating a fragrance into a candle adds a new level to the therapeutic part of that candle burning process, Rexilius said.

"We like to focus on the fun stuff, which is blending fragrances," she said. “It’s fun when we have people and they all like some of the same fragrances but all of their candles turn out different just by the amount of oil that they put in.”

Aside from candles, New Braunfels Candle and Crystal Co. sells crystals, jewelry, smudge sticks, honey and more.

What else?

Rexilius said she is working to integrate more wellness into their candles through different oils.

“I found a company that has oils that are missing important ingredients that could be potential hormone disruptors. That's very important for women to know about,” Rexilius said.
