Incumbent Democrat Javier Salazar and Republican Nathan Buchanan won their respective March 5 primary in the race for Bexar County sheriff.

What happened

Unofficial Bexar County election data showed Salazar winning the Democratic primary with 70.7% of the vote vs. his lone challenger, Sharon Rodriguez.

Salazar, who seeks a third term, said said his reelection campaign focused on combating human trafficking, assembling an organized crime and gang unit, helping to shore up school safety, addressing family violence and defending domestic violence victims, and establishing a special victims unit.


During his campaign, Salazar said his agency also made improvements in recruitment and training, addressing public corruption, increasing police accountability, and protecting senior citizens.

Buchanan, a former sheriff's deputy, won the GOP primary with 54.4% of the vote, followed by Victor Mendoza and Dennis Casillas. A former Castle Hills police officer, Buchanan currently owns a cleaning company and previously ran for Bexar County judge and for cxonstable.

Salazar and Buchanan now advance to the November general election.

According to unofficial Bexar County election results March 5, incumbent Sheriff Javier Salazar maintained a commanding lead in the Democratic primary.

Current situation

With 126 of 267 voting centers counted, Salazar had 72.61% of the early and regular vote versus his lone challenger, Sharon Rodriguez, who previously worked at the sheriff’s department and at Hollywood Park Police Department.

Unofficial Bexar County election totals showed on March 5 an early lead for incumbent Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar in the Democratic primary.


Current situation

According to early voting totals, Salazar had 74.2% of the vote over his lone challenger, Sharon Rodriguez, who previously worked at the sheriff’s department and at Hollywood Park Police Department.
