To keep up with gas demands for new developments in the eastern portion of Boerne, City Council on March 11 approved a resolution to modify the construction of the East Loop Natural Gas Main.

The details

This resolution is a modification of the original project, which was awarded to Badeco Boring & Utilities.

The project was split into two phases, and due to unanticipated use from residents, the second phase was modified to include another connection from the large diameter supply main to a different point on the distribution system, according to the council agenda.

Utilities Director Michael Mann said city staff did forecast the growth and number of lines correctly when planning the project, but larger meters and other industry changes in gas appliances led to a demand increase.

Mann said the demand can be up to one and half times the usual demand, meaning the addition of 100 houses could require the demand equivalent of 150 houses.

Alongside these demand increases, Mann highlighted the lack of gas pressure to sections of the city during colder days. The modification of the plan would allow better pressure leading up to future winters.

The overall project budgeted amount was $2.5 million, and total actual cost was around $1.9 million, leaving the city with additional budgeted funds to cover the cost of the modification.

The modification takes the cost of the second phase from $683,567 to around $854,450.

Mann said the city received an easement from the Trails at Herff Ranch to tie in another six-inch line off the eight-inch line which will help the city with capacity concerns, allowing this addition to be completed alongside the planned project.

“If we don’t do it now, we will have to design and bid it separately or part of another project,” he said.

Mann said construction is expected in the coming months.
