$3.5 million in street maintenance coming to Round Rock

Round Rock City Council approved $3.5 million in funding Oct. 24 for the 2023 arterial street maintenance program with a contract with Cutler Repaving.

The update

City Council approved the contract with Cutler Repaving, Inc. for nine arterial roads at its meeting Oct. 24. The road work will improve segments of Creek Bend Boulevard, Bass Pro Drive, Smyers Lane, Mays Street, Deep Wood Drive, Hidden Valley Drive, Bowman Road, Tiger Trail and Chandler Creek Trail.

This maintenance involves removing a layer of old asphalt to replace it with fresh surfacing, along with repairing damaged pavement, curbs, sidewalks and driveway approaches where needed. Thane said that the maintenance should provide seven to 10 years of longevity for the roadways once completed.

About the program

Round Rock has two street maintenance programs—one for neighborhood roads and one for arterials, which are major roadways. Over the last 10 years, the city has spent $25 million for the arterial street maintenance program and $35 million for the neighborhood program.

“We spend a significant amount of time with funding to make sure we maintain a good road network for our city,” Director of Public Works Michael Thane said.

Every five to six years, the city does a full assessment of the roadways to determine need for maintenance, according to Thane. He also said that the department uses information from crew trucks and citizen input.

Work on the latest street paving projects will begin in December and complete in spring 2025.
