3 names under consideration for Round Rock ISD's 35th elementary school

Round Rock ISD's board of trustees outlined three name recommendations for Elementary School No. 35, the district's newest elementary school, set to open in the fall. Natalie Nichols, Stony Point Learning Community area superintendent, delivered a presentation to the board March 25, with three recommendations proposed:

• Juanita Craft Elementary School
• Redbud Elementary School
• Bright Lake Elementary School

The committee selected Juanita Craft Elementary as its top choice, in honor of the Round Rock-born civil rights activist. Reasons behind the committee's selection included "[Craft's] connection to the community, her dedication to children and public education, and her historic contributions to the Civil Rights Movement," according to a RRISD news release.

Redbud Elementary was proposed in recognition of the upcoming campus's proximity to the adjacent Old Settlers Park as well as the school's design, per the release. The campus design features a large tree as the focal point of the campus entrance and library.

Bright Lake Elementary was recommended due to Old Settlers Park's central lake feature and its natural setting.

While the RRISD board is not obligated to select one of the proposed names as the official campus name, board members said March 25 one of the three recommendations will be approved. The RRISD board of trustees will decide on the official name for ES No. 35 at the April 15 regular meeting, per the release.

ES No. 35 will open in the fall at 1500 Ty Cobb Place, Round Rock. The school was incorporated into the 2018 ISD bond as a means of reducing overcrowding at Herrington Elementary School, per the release.
