Daniel Burdette was sworn in Sept. 28 as the new Place 3 representative on Richardson City Council.
Burdette replaces former council member Dan Barrios, who stepped down to focus on his campaign for U.S. Congress.
The overview
Burdette will serve out the remainder of Barrios’ council term, which will end May 1, 2027. The Place 3 seat will be up for election in May.
Richardson’s city charter states that a single vacancy on the council must be filled by appointment, decided by a majority vote by the remaining members of council. Council approved Burdette’s appointment in a unanimous vote, which Barrios recused himself from.
“We had a thoughtful selection process with a number of people willing to step forward and serve, and we appreciate the willingness from everyone who participated,” Mayor Amir Omar said.
The details
“To my new colleagues on the dais, thank you for supporting me to serve in this role,” Burdette said at the council meeting. “I look forward to working with each of you in the next seven months as we strive together to keep Richardson moving in a positive direction.”
Burdette has been a resident of Richardson for 25 years and has held volunteer and leadership roles in the Wildflower Arts and Music Festival, served on the Richardson Parks and Recreation Commission and participated in Richardson CARES and Leadership Richardson. He is currently vice president of product development for software company MyDirectives.
This was the last council meeting for Barrios, who was first elected in 2023.
“Richardson, I am eternally grateful for the time entrusted to me to represent and make decisions on your behalf,” Barrios said. “I hope to continue to have that opportunity to serve you in D.C. Win or lose that race, I will continue to find a way to serve this city.”
Some context
Burdette was one of 13 residents who applied for the council seat. Council selected eight candidates to move forward to initial interviews and three candidates for final interviews, all of which were conducted in open session.
The new council member had to be a qualified voter, a resident of Richardson for at least one year prior to the appointment and at least 21 years old. The Place 3 council member also represents Richardson’s District 3, which spans most of the west side of the city, and must reside in that district.
Also of note
Council member Joe Corcoran is running unopposed in the November general election for the Place 3 seat on the Collin Central Appraisal District board of directors. Corcoran announced Sept. 20 that he intends to remain on council while serving on the district board until the May 2027 election, when a new council member will be elected to his seat.
