AISD approves a 10 percent budget increase, to set tax rate in September

The Alvin ISD board of trustees approved a $303.1 million budget at its June 13 meeting.

The budget included $244.1 million for the general revenue fund budget, which is used for the district’s maintenance and operation, including building maintenance, teacher salaries, instructional support and central administration.

The 2017-18 school year general revenue fund budget was roughly $24 million more than last year’s general fund budget, and overall expenditures have increased by $30.5 million.

“In Alvin ISD, school funding has remained largely the same; however, budget increases are driven by our rapidly growing student enrollment,” said Daniel Combs, assistant superintendent of professional learning and student and community engagement.

The district added nearly 3,500 students in three years. This year’s budget priorities focused on teachers and necessary resources.

“Alvin ISD’s budgeting priorities focus on hiring top quality teachers to meet the instructional needs of our students and providing needed resources to support and expand instructional student programs throughout the district,” AISD Superintendent Buck Gilcrease said.

AISD anticipates it will set its tax rate at a September board meeting, district officials said. The 2016-17 tax rate was $1.45 per $100 valuation, with 41 cents for debt service.
