PREVIEW: Pearland to consider updated water supply agreement

Pearland City Council will consider an update to the city’s raw water supply arrangements with the Gulf Coast Water Authority, or GCWA, extending the term through 2056 at its July 27 meeting.

What you need to know

The updated agreement maintains the city’s access to 10 million gallons per day, or MGD, of raw surface water and preserves the option to secure up to an additional 10 MGD through the city’s participation in GCWA’s Chocolate Bayou and Juliff water rights acquisition, according to city documents.

The agreement is part of a broader effort to modernize long-term water planning and align water availability with GCWA’s regional infrastructure plans, city documents show.

What else?

Pearland City Council will also consider authorizing an application for up to $21 million through the Texas Water Development Board's Water Supply and Infrastructure Grant program to help fund improvements to the city’s water infrastructure and operational management systems.

The city is eligible to apply under House Bill 500, passed during the 89th Texas Legislature, which established funding for public water systems serving populations between 10,001 and 150,000, according to city documents.
