In an interview with Community Impact, Alvin ISD’s new superintendent, Rhonda Mason, discussed her vision for the district, leadership approach and priorities following the announcement of her appointment May 13.
Mason brings more than 25 years of experience in Texas public education, having served as a teacher, principal and district leader in Houston ISD, Fort Bend ISD and Lamar CISD, according to a May 13 news release from the district.
What is your vision for Alvin ISD, and what are your top priorities in both the short term and long term?
My vision for Alvin ISD is to ensure that every student graduates prepared to pursue their dreams, contribute to their community and thrive in whatever path they choose. I believe every student has the potential to succeed and our responsibility is to provide the opportunities, support and experiences necessary to help them reach their full potential.
In the short term, my priorities are listening, learning and building strong relationships with our students, staff, families and community members. I want to understand what is working well, identify areas for growth and ensure we are aligned around a shared vision for student success.
Long term, I am focused on strengthening academic excellence, expanding opportunities for students, developing and retaining outstanding staff, maintaining safe and supportive learning environments, and ensuring that Alvin ISD continues to be a district our community is proud to support. Every decision we make should ultimately benefit students and prepare them for a successful future.
What would you like students, families, staff and community members to know about you as a leader?
I want people to know that I am a relationship-driven leader who believes that listening is one of the most important responsibilities of leadership. I value transparency, collaboration and open communication, and I believe the best decisions are made when people work together toward a common goal.
I will always keep students at the center of every decision. I believe in supporting and empowering our staff, partnering with families, and building trust throughout the community. My commitment is to lead with integrity, treat people with respect, and work tirelessly to ensure that every student has access to the opportunities they need to succeed.
What sets Alvin ISD apart from other districts?
What sets Alvin ISD apart is its people. The passion of our educators, the support of our families, the dedication of our staff and the pride of this community create an environment where students can thrive.
Alvin ISD has a strong tradition of excellence while maintaining a close connection to the community it serves. There is a genuine commitment to students and a shared belief that their success matters. As I have learned more about the district, I have been impressed by the pride that exists throughout the schools and community, and I believe that collective commitment will continue to be one of Alvin ISD's greatest strengths moving forward.
As Alvin continues to evolve, how do you preserve what families value about the district?
The best way to preserve what families value is to listen to them and involve them in the process. Every district has traditions, strengths and a culture that makes it special. As Alvin continues to grow and evolve, it is important that we honor the history, relationships and values that have helped shape this community.
Growth should never mean losing our identity. Instead, it should mean building upon our strengths while continuing to improve opportunities for students. By maintaining open communication and seeking input from families, staff, students and community members, we can ensure that Alvin ISD continues to reflect the values and expectations of the people it serves.
