Friendswood ISD students at Windsong Elementary School and Bales Intermediate School will have access to upgraded science labs for the 2027-28 school year following the board's approval of preliminary designs at its Oct. 12 meeting.
What’s new
Funded through the 2026 bond program, the science lab renovations will convert existing classrooms into dedicated science learning spaces, including additional instructional and storage space, laboratory sinks and magnetic writable wall surfaces, district documents show.
The designs were developed in collaboration with campus principals to maximize available space and provide equal learning environments at both schools, documents show.
The cost
The nearly $810,000 project budget is below the original allocated cost of $1 million for conversions on both campuses, at $317 per square foot.
Cost projections are preliminary and will be updated as the project progresses through the design process, district officials said.
The renovations are funded through Proposition A of the 2026 bond program, which totals approximately $26 million, and also funds facility upgrades, including hot water pump replacements, foundation repairs and fire alarm system improvements, as well as land acquisition and the replacement of 10 buses to meet state requirements, as previously reported by Community Impact.
Looking ahead
Construction is expected to take six months, with substantial completion expected by Aug. 2, 2027, district documents show.
