Reconstructed I-35 to US 183 ramp to reopen Saturday, Sept. 11

After being partially demolished earlier this spring by Texas Department of Transportation crews, a ramp connecting I-35 to US 183 will reopen Sept. 11 for the first time in months.

The reconstructed flyover for northbound I-35 to northbound US 183 will open Saturday morning at 8 a.m., according to a Sept. 9 news release from TxDOT.

As previously reported by Community Impact Newspaper, the ramp was demolished in May before crews reconstructed the ramp. State officials said the previous ramp was too steep and caused some traffic—particularly large trucks—to slow down and delay traffic.

A new northbound bypass lane will additionally open the morning of Sept. 11 to drivers, according to TxDOT. The new lane will allow drivers on the northbound I-35 frontage road to bypass the traffic signal at St. Johns Avenue to enter I-35 or stay on the frontage road to the US 183 intersection.

Prior to opening the I-35 to US 183 flyover and the bypass lanes, TxDOT will temporarily close the I-35 mainlanes to restripe the roadway. Beginning at 11 p.m. on Sept. 10, the northbound I-35 mainlanes will be closed, and traffic will detour to the frontage road at the US 183 South exit and re-enter the I-35 mainlanes near Rundberg Lane. The work will be finished, and all lanes will be open by 8 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 11, according to TxDOT.

This is the third new or reconstructed flyover to open at the interchange of I-35 and US 183 in North Austin this year. The flyovers are part of a multiyear project to construct flyovers connecting the two major highways.

TxDOT crews are working on constructing the last remaining flyover as part of the project. The new flyover, which will connect northbound US 183 to northbound I-35, is expected to open later this fall.
