$131M in CAMPO grants to fund WilCo road projects
The Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization dedicated about $131 million in federal funding for nine road projects and one trail project in Williamson County, according to a June 12 county news release.
The projects span Georgetown, Hutto, Leander, Liberty Hill, Northwest Austin and Round Rock.
CAMPO selected projects to receive funding from the 2028-31 open call for projects. The evaluation process includes independent reviewers weighing risk assessment, project readiness and the cost-benefit analysis, according to the release.

Austin seeks to rein in 'chaotic' e-moto use
Austin could rein in the use of electronic motorcycles and mini-bikes, or e-motos, in response to lacking local regulations and rising roadway safety concerns.
Austin doesn't have any specific regulations on the books for e-motos, which can drive as fast as 60 miles per hour or more—well above an existing cap of 28 MPH for e-bikes as established in Texas transportation law.
Council member Paige Ellis said her office had worked with APD for months to review existing motorbike rules, consider where the vehicles might be appropriate to drive and lay out a new safety strategy aimed at youth. The resolution advanced by city leaders this spring will now result in proposed updates to city code defining e-motos and their legality, establishing when and where they're permitted and setting related penalties. A report on those changes will be presented by late July.

Barton Springs Road Bridge turns 100 amid replacement debate
Save Our Springs Alliance, an Austin-based nonprofit focused on protecting the Edwards Aquifer and Barton Springs watershed, hosted a centennial event June 21 at the bridge near the entrance to Zilker Park.
The celebrations took place amid an active debate over the bridge's future, as the city of Austin moves forward with plans to replace the structure
As Community Impact reported June 15, Austin Transportation and Public Works has the bridge in the design phase, with bid and award expected late 2026 to early 2027 and construction slated to begin in summer 2027. Funding includes the 2020 Mobility Bond and a $32 million grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation's Bridge Investment Program.

Blakey Lane extension inches forward near Burleson Crossing East
After design delays stalled the city-led project, Bastrop drivers could soon see extension work begin on a portion of Blakey Lane aimed at easing traffic congestion and improving access near Burleson Crossing East.
City Council approved a developer reimbursement agreement June 23 that allows BEBD Frontage Road LLC—the developer of Burleson Crossing East—to spearhead the extension, with the city reimbursing eligible costs during construction.
According to the cost estimate, the work includes the construction of a 375-linear-foot extension of Blakey Lane, along with the installation of waterlines.
Per the agreement, the city will reimburse the developer up to $690,000 for eligible costs through a monthly certification and payment process throughout construction.
Work must be completed within 18 months, or no later than December 2027.

I-35 northbound lanes to temporarily close for up to 4 weekends
South Austin residents may need to adjust their commutes as Texas Department of Transportation officials prepare to close I-35 northbound main lanes nightly for three weekends, which began June 26-27.
The northbound lanes will be blocked off between Slaughter Lane and SH 71/Ben White Boulevard for construction crews to work on elevated managed lanes as part of the I-35 Capital Express South Project.
The lanes will be closed on the following days from 11 p.m.-9 a.m.:

San Marcos awarded $12.6 million in federal funding for transportation projects
In October 2025, CAMPO, began accepting applications for transportation projects seeking federal funding. The city of San Marcos was awarded $12.6 million in CAMPO funding for two projects.
The Cape Street Shared Use Path project was awarded $820,934 to be put toward the approximately $1.03 million design phase, according to the release. The grant requires a local funding match of $205,234. The city and Hays County will equally share the cost of the match.
The Old Ranch Road 12 Improvements project was awarded approximately $11.8 million to be put toward the $14.7 million construction phase, according to the release. The city will contribute a required local match of $2.9 million to the project.
