Drivers traveling between West Austin and West Lake Hills may notice construction crews in the area performing maintenance work on Redbud Trail beginning July 13. The city said the work is routine maintenance and includes repaving and re-striping lanes, repairing guardrails along the Emmett Shelton Bridge and other minor bridge repairs. Work is expected to be finished by early to mid-August, weather permitting, and will take place mostly between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. on weekdays as well as possibly some Saturdays between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. The construction work will necessitate some temporary lane closures, with traffic limited to one lane in each direction on a rotating basis, according to the city. However, access will not be restricted to the bridge or Red Bud Isle Park. The short-term work is not related to the bridge replacement project that is currently in the design phase. The bridge, which was built in 1948, has insufficient bicycle and pedestrian paths in place and was not designed with modern traffic in mind, according to the city. In November 2018, voters approved $160 million in bond funding for transportation infrastructure, including $50 million toward the Redbud Trail project. After reviewing alternatives, the city selected a design that will construct a new bridge, which will keep one traffic lane in both directions but add shoulders for improved safety as well as a shared bicycle and pedestrian path. Conceptual design work will continue through 2019, according to a timeline posted on the project’s website, before a detailed bridge design phase from 2020-23. Construction is set to take place in 2024-25. The city held a public meeting June 27 to receive input and provide an update on the project, and it is set to hold another meeting in late 2019 or early 2020.
