Roxanne and Curt Hill say they “speak dog.” As the owners of Camp Bow Wow Hutto, the Hills spend their days caring for canines.

“We decided to go into this business because we love dogs,” Roxanne said. “We’re the kind of people that talk for dogs.”

Camp Bow Wow Hutto opened in March 2018 and provides day care and boarding services for dogs. Grooming and training services are also available during a dog’s stay in the climate-controlled building, which can host up to 120 dogs. Owners can watch their dogs on a webcam.

The dog care center is open 365 days a year and employs around 24 staff members, including certified caretakers, a groomer, a certified trainer and managing staff.

Roxanne said owners who send their dogs to Camp Bow Wow Hutto have seen their pets behave better at home.

“They learn a lot of stuff organically,” she said. “Just by being here, they’re better dogs.”

The Hills said they expect summer boarding numbers to rise as area dog owners take vacations. Last Christmas, Camp Bow Wow boarded 114 dogs—a peak for the business in its first year.

Before opening Camp Bow Wow, Roxanne ran a preschool for foster children and children with special needs. Curt continues to also work as an architect. They said they both love animals and found dog boarding and care to be a perfect fit.

At home, the Hills have two dogs and three cats, all rescue animals. Camp Bow Wow Hutto fosters dogs from the Williamson County Regional Animal Shelter so they can more freely play outside a kennel and interact with other dogs, Roxanne said. About five dogs from the Williamson County Regional Animal Shelter have been adopted so far.

“We’ve always had a heart for dogs that don’t have homes,” she said. “Here they get to play.”

The Hills said plans to launch another Camp Bow Wow location in the North Austin area could take shape soon. The Hutto community was welcoming to their business, they said, and they hope for continued support.

“We’re definitely an animal-lovin’ town. We put the needs of our animals first,” Roxanne said.
