League City officials have set up orange barrels, traffic cones and other temporary traffic control measures along and near Hwy. 3 to alleviate crashes, wrong turns and road rage incidents. The city is also considering proposed ways to permanently correct traffic issues, according to a weekly update from the city. At Hwy. 3 and FM 518, drivers sometimes cut across the six-lane highway between Second Street and League streets during peak travel times despite not being able to fully see oncoming traffic. The city has put barricades along the median to help deter this problem, according to the update. The city proposes making the barricade permanent. League and Second streets’ intersections with Hwy. 3 could become right turn-only lanes to prevent drivers from trying to cut across the highway at an uncontrolled intersection, the update reads. The city has also set up traffic cones along the northbound left turn lanes of Hwy. 3 where it intersects FM 518 to prevent drivers from traveling the wrong way in the opposing left turn lane. The city is considering extending the northbound left turn lane to 300 feet of vehicle storage, which would remove the ability for southbound Hwy. 3 drivers to turn left onto East Galveston Street. The city could also make East and West Galveston streets’ intersections with Hwy. 3 become right turn-only lanes to eliminate east-west travel along Galveston where it intersects with Hwy. 3, according to the release. Crews have installed barrels down the center two-way turn lanes along Hwy. 3 where it intersects with League City Parkway. The goal is to deter drivers from cutting down the two-way turn lanes and encourage motorists to use the left turn lane at the traffic signal. The city is considering permanently extending the left turn lanes to 200-300 feet of vehicle storage. The city is also considering changing Houston Avenue’s intersection with FM 518 to turn-only lanes so drivers must turn onto FM 518 instead of crossing it at an uncontrolled intersection, according to the update.

These upgrades will lead to traffic delays, the release reads. Plum Hollow Drive In related transportation news, Plum Hollow Drive is undergoing construction this month.
