Following interviews with three candidates during a special meeting at Bee Cave City Hall, City Council has selected a new city attorney.
Council ended up selecting the law firm Denton Navarro Rocha Bernal & Zech after deliberating in an executive session June 13. Mayor Monty Parker said the unanimous decision from council was in line with City Manager Clint Garza's recommendation.
“The city of Bee Cave has experienced a number of challenges accompanying the development pressures and rapid growth over the last 20 years," Garza said in an email statement regarding the new firm. "I truly believe we are in a position to continue to develop a very special community as we work to maintain and improve the quality of life that is so important to our residents."
The new appointment is significant given Bee Cave has retained the services of Akers & Akers LLP for the last 16 years with Patty Akers helming the position for the firm.
Council first decided to look into its legal representation in early 2019. During the Jan. 8 City Council meeting, officials directed city staff to go out for requests for proposals and qualifications for city attorney services.
The primary reason for the request, as stated by members of the council, centered on the fact that a request for proposals and qualifications had not been conducted throughout Akers’ stint as city attorney.
"Although I am looking forward to working with our new city attorney, I recognize that without Patty’s 16 years of dedicated service to our community we would not be in the wonderful position we are in, and frankly, Bee Cave would be a different place than it is today," Garza said. "The city of Bee Cave will always be grateful for her contributions and partnership.”
Parker said Akers signed her current contract through the law firm Akers & Akers LLP in 2009.
