A few miles west of Montgomery, BNSF Railway Company is constructing additional tracks, according to Director of Public Affairs Lena Kent. The project, part of BNSF’s capital expenditure and maintenance program, also includes 10,000 feet of siding—or a low-speed track section spurring off from the main line where trains can pull over. In February, BNSF announced its 2019 capital expenditure and maintenance program in Texas will be $405 million, via a press release. BNSF has invested $1.8 billion over the past five years to expand and maintain 5,000 miles of track in Texas. This year, the program includes 680 miles of track surfacing—correcting the alignment as the rails compress by the weight of trains over time—and undercutting—scooping out contaminated gravel from below the tracks—as well as the replacement of nearly 30 miles of rail and almost 210,000 ties. Kent said the Dobbin-area project is expected to be complete by the end of May.
