Since the creation of Safer71 in November, founder Greg Short and other members have been busy. Safer71 is a nonprofit dedicated to safety on the section of Hwy. 71 that runs through western Travis County. Since last November, members have been meeting with various city and Travis County officials as well as officials from the Texas Department of Transportation and the Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization “to ensure that local and state government bodies deliver the safest possible highway possible,” the group’s website states. Now, Safer71 has scheduled a group of dates ranging from mid- to late April in various locations throughout the Lake Travis area to inform residents about their progress with state and local officials regarding safety on Hwy. 71, as well as hear from citizens about their specific concerns. Short said via email the meetings are a prelude to a larger town hall event with government and agency officials planned for the fall.
