Jennifer Saul, the owner of Twice Upon a Time Children’s Consignment Boutique, said she could not be happier with her shop in downtown New Braunfels, but she did not dream of owning a business as many business owners do.

Saul was happy with her corporate job for many years, but when her daughter had open-heart surgery at 3 years old, she decided she needed something that would provide for her family while allowing her to have her daughter close by.

Saul purchased the store in 2014 and has since moved it to Main Plaza in downtown New Braunfels. She sells children’s consignment clothing up to size 14, toys and new gifts.

Before purchasing the shop, Saul was a customer. When her children were young, she said she wanted the ability to buy high-quality, brand-name clothing but could not afford it.

Her ultimate goal is for everyone to leave the store with a great deal that makes them want to come back time and time again.

The shop has been open for 15 years, and Saul said she does not see an end in sight.

“I absolutely love it because it still enables me to have a family life,” she said.

Specifically, Saul loves being in the heart of the city.

“It just holds so many memories for me from when I was a kid. I walked—every single day—to my mom’s work,” Saul said.

Saul said she has lived in New Braunfels her whole life, and her mother—who died three years ago—worked in the Comal County Sheriff’s Office, which used to be located downtown.

Saul said she does not always look to the past, though. She wants to provide her children with a solid foundation for the future, so she regularly brings her daughters into the store to help out.

“I think it’s important for [them] to learn to get off of [their] devices and talk to people, so I drag my daughters in here as often as I can,” she said.

A consignor receives 40 percent of the sale of an item, and the process is tracked electronically.

“We don’t take the word ‘boutique’ lightly, though,” Saul said. “We look for items that are almost new.”

Saul calls herself “reasonably particular” with the items she sells in her store. She wants to make sure her customers receive the best merchandise possible, so she only accepts clothing by appointment. That way, she can go through the items in-depth.

Anything that is not accepted into consignment is either given back to the original customer or donated to a charitable organization in the New Braunfels community.
