Of the five candidates who ran for two open “at large” seats on the Lakeway City Council, Louis Mastrangelo and Laurie Higginbotham won the positions.
Candidate Wendi Severance ran an extremely close race, trailing Higginbotham by only three votes with 100 percent of the returns in, but in the end fell short of landing a council seat. Because the council structure is “at large,” the top two vote-getters took the two open spots.
Glenda Foreman Engert and Betty Haley, wife of outgoing Council Member Dwight Haley, also ran.
Leading vote getter Louis Mastrangelo ran on a platform that emphasized citizen engagement and also focused on remedying Lakeway’s infrastructure and wildlife issues.
“I’m really humbled and honored by the election results,” Mastrangelo said. “I’m especially proud of Lakeway voters who turned out to vote and proved that our voices matter. It was an amazing number of votes considering that at our last midterms we did about 25 or 28 percent of what we did this time. The turnout proved that our voices matter. I look forward to representing all citizens and serving our community.”
The two open seats in the Lakeway election included one vacancy that resulted from Jean Hennagin’s June 28 resignation from the City Council, and Dwight Haley’s seat comprised the other vacancy. Mastrangelo and Higginbotham will serve 18-month terms that expire in May 2020.
Higginbotham could not be reached for comment at this time.
