Every 65 seconds, someone in the United States develops Alzheimer’s disease, according to the Alzheimer’s Association. With so many people developing this disease and similar issues that impair their cognitive function, families often need to search for outside care for their loved ones. As the name implies, Memory Care of New Braunfels is specifically dedicated to those who have Alzheimer’s, dementia and other forms of memory loss. Vivian Wideman-Edwards is the executive director and has been with Memory Care of New Braunfels since the facility opened in 2016. “The building is designed specifically for memory care patients,” Wideman-Edwards said. Many residents in the facility enjoy walking around during the day, and the circular never-ending hallways help them get their exercise. The paint and decor throughout the building was chosen in order to promote a cheerful atmosphere for the residents, and there is a schedule of daily activities to help the residents stay in a routine. “We want people to feel welcome when they come here,” Wideman-Edwards said. To keep the residents engaged with their families, the facility also hosts monthly events surrounding various themes. “The events bring the families in and make them feel like they’re a part of what we’re doing here,” Wideman-Edwards said. From Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners to luau parties, the events bring residents and their families together on a regular basis. Since families are not able to be around all the time, however, the staff at Memory Care of New Braunfels often fills the void. “We see our residents more than their families do, and more than we see our own. We become their family, too,” Wideman-Edwards said. Linda Gabbard’s mother has been at Memory Care of New Braunfels for nearly two years. “I love that the staff here is always friendly and upbeat, and they really show that they care for the residents,” Gabbard said.
